exploring Tech through Multi-Media
This semester long course is designed to help you explore future career paths in various forms of media. Using hands on, real world problem solving projects you will have the opportunity to work individually and in groups to develop an understanding of the foundations of digital art, business tools, techniques, and video production. Much like a college classroom, students will use Edmodo to digitally manage all of their classwork from class and from their computers at home. Edmodo even has a mobile app! Click on the link to go to the Edmodo page on this site, Students need to print, sign and return the "Edmodo Code of Conduct" form on that page.
Building Web sites with weebly
Student Advertising Campaign Poster
One of our most successful projects in terms of gaining media skills is making web sites using Weebly. This free or low cost online program allows 40 additional student accounts under one paid teacher account. We used this opportunity to do some pretty amazing stuff during the Spring of 2013. Students voted on their favorites, here are the ones that received the Student awards. Remember these are the ones selected by the other students, not by their teacher. Gimp: photo-editing software
Gimp is a photo editing software tool that we use in the classroom to explore visual manipulation. We used Gimp instead of Photoshop for image manipulation because of one important reason... it's FREE! If it is free, that means that students can download it outside of school and explore it's capabilities in greater depth. We have used Gimp to create interesting titles and text documents in a video called gimptricks Later we did the Rose project as pictured to the left, and finally student groups used Gimp to create a poster to support their advertising campaigns (pictured up top).

Windows movie maker live
Windows Live Movie Maker is a considerable step up from its forerunner, Windows Movie Maker, and if you’re a Vista or Windows 7 user, then it’s a free download. This software’s main aim in life is to make life easier for the home video enthusiast. Because most of us own so much digital equipment these days, we’re overloaded with photos and videos. It can sometimes be a royal pain trying to get them into a useful format to share with friends and family through various social networks. Although this is a fairly straightforward piece of editing kit, to be honest, the interface is a bit fiddly to use. The controls aren’t necessarily in the most user-friendly place and you might need to do some scrolling around which is a tiny pain.
Pro's: The editing suite is pretty user-friendly and uses thumbnails in a handy timeline which makes it easy even for total beginners to edit their home movies.
Con's: The main drawback with this programme is that you’re limited to exporting in the WMV Windows format which will frustrate some users.
Conclusion: The interface is not perfect, but it’s a small moan really. Overall, if you can bear to put up with just exporting in WMV, then Windows Live Movie Maker makes it tons easier to upload films to the likes of You Tube, which is what it’s all about, right?

While we didn't explore this last year, I am hoping that we will have the opportunity to play with Sketch-up. It will require equal parts teacher research and student expertise to make this happen, but here is a description of just some of what this drawing software can do...SketchUp users are architects, designers, builders, makers and engineers. They are the people who shape the physical world. They are important, and they deserve great tools because great tools produce great work.
Great tools are ones you look forward to using. They do one thing (or maybe two) really, really well. They let you do what you want without having to figure out how. They help with hard or boring tasks so that you can focus on being creative, or productive, or both. And they are, in their own way, beautiful.
At SketchUp, we do our best to make great tools for drawing. For our users, drawing is thinking. They draw to explore ideas, to figure things out, to show other people what they mean. They draw because they love it, and because nothing great was ever built that didn't start with a great drawing.
